MPLAB X IDE is an IDE for developing applications for Microchip microcontrollers and digital signal controllers.

It is based on the open source NetBeans IDE from Oracle. Its Programmer’s Editor helps write correct code with the language tools of choice. The editor is aware of the assembler and compiler programming constructs and automatically “color-keys” the source code to help ensure it is syntactically correct.

I'd always been content with MPLAB 8x, but read somewhere a week or two ago that it does not support Microchip's newest PICs. So on a whim I downloaded and installed it.
